inkstains is the debut album from phatchance; it is entirely self engineered and demonstrates the culmination of two years of dedicated independent work. inkstains is a cohesive, emotive and extremely personal album that promises to smash open any remnants of the perception that australian hip-hop is a genre with a shelf life.

on the back of multiple years of a non-stop and highly praised touring schedule supporting the likes of bliss n eso, the herd, urthboy, the potbelleez, drapht, pez, the funkoars, pegz, muph n plutonic and phrase, as well as numerous international artists; planet asia, de la soul and k rino to name a few, phatchance has already established a recognizable name amongst artists and fans of australian hip-hop. from executively producing a score of releases (including two for scene favorites mind over matter) to winning mp3 of the year (ozhiphop.com) and a coveted feature artist spot on triple j unearthed phatchance has laid the foundations for what promises to be a fantastically received debut.

inkstains is packed full of production from some of the best beatsmiths in the country, including adit (horrorshow) and akouo, whose debut release was the triple j hip-hop shows feature album of the week earlier this year. california’s dj hoppa (bliss n eso – up jumped the boogie) also provides production for the album as do locals konfuzion, elgen & one above.

inkstains boasts verses from 360 (of the 2008 smash hit ‘the festival song’), prime and smiles again (mind over matter) it also features hooks from, amongst others, joyride (urthboy – ‘hellsong’) hr king (‘glamour baby’), sam mcneill (saving grace) and miriam waks. sonically the album is a mash of hip-hop drums, live instrumentation, acoustic and electronic influences; it moves away from the traditional boom-bap sound of australian hip-hop and has moments of eclectic layering more reminiscent of popular international indie bands than local rap groups.

inkstains is arguably the most personally revealing release to emerge from the genre, and fills a niche that has been missing from australian hip-hop for some time. the album is guaranteed to establish phatchance as a key name to watch in the new generation of local hip-hop acts, it’s a matter of when not if.
